Welcome to our tutorial on URL Trackers or more often referred to as Ad Trackers. If you are not using an ad tracker you are missing out big time. It will save you time and money by knowing which email ads are working and which are not and therefore increase your sales and profit. This tutorial looks at what an ad or URL tracker is and how we use it.
A URL Tracker is a remotely hosted server side tool used for tracking the clicks and user information of your marketing campaigns without any software or scripts to install or download. The URL Tracker creates a unique URL to use for your marketing campaigns instead of the regular URL's you currently use for your various email, banner, and affiliate program marketing.
A good URL Tracker will record all of the following user and campaign information automatically:
Hits: Both unique and total clicks on your individual links.
IP Address: The Url Tracker will let you know th IP address of the user that clicked on your link.
Referral URL: The URL Tracker will let you know which site your users came from. It will list the referring URL for every user that clicks on your link indicating which site they were at when they selected your link.
Language: It can tell you the language used by every visitor that clicks your link.
Example of Use
If you are doing any type of online marketing you are probably doing it through the use of hyperlinks (URLs). How the Tracker works is that it replaces your original URL with a unique URL.
Why should I replace my current URL with a unique URL?
As was mentioned earlier, the unique URL allows the Tracker software to keep track of a wealth of information about who is clicking on your links, including the number of clicks, and user information regarding those users that clicked. Normally, most URL Trackers, in particular the free ones, do not offer this level of user and campaign information collection. When a user clicks on a link, they are immediately redirected to your original (target) URL, but that is only after first being sent briefly to the Tracker site. The Tracker site collects the clicks and user information. All of this takes place in a split-second and the end-user that clicked on the link is not aware of the redirection. To them they simply clicked on your link and were immediately sent to your original (target) URL.
There are lots of URL Trackers to select from on the Internet, however, if you want a good one that you can rely on you will have to pay for it. Quite often URL Trackers come bundled with other marketing tools. Step-by-Step Instructions -
The following instructions are on the URL Tracker that I use. However, the instructions are basically the same for all trackers. There are two sections that you need to become familiar with in order to get started
1. Manage Your Campaigns: This is where you generate the unique URL"s that you will use in place of your original hyperlinks. You can genrerate your links easily, by simply filling out several of the following fields related to your marketing campaigns:
To add a URL to be tracked press the Add URL button and fill in the following fields:
URL to be tracked: Is the URL that your visitor will ultimately be directed to. This is the URL you wll be replacing with your new hyperlink.
Campaign: This is the name you give your individual marketing campaigns.
Once you press the GO button you will be returned to the URL Tracker List and your newly inserted information will be displayed. You will notice that a tracker URL field has been created.
Tracking URL: This is the unique URL that is generated for you and that you will be using for your ad campaigns. Oncs this URL is generated, you can begin using it in your marketing promotions immediately.
You may add up to 10 URLs to be tracked by the Tracker I am using.
2. General Reports;
This section is where you go to analyze the clicks and user information generated from your campaigns. Click on the Report Link next to the URL that you would like to view the report on.
